UPDATE 1st Nov 2016: We came back to try the things we missed before and they were quite amazing. Namely the Salmon Tataki, Scotch Eggs and scallops in black bean sauce.
Jidori is the only dedicated Yakitori speciality restaurant in London I know of so have been very keen to visit. On entrance we were asked if we'd like to sit at the bar but actually it was more of a rhetorical question as the place was fully booked. Luckily it would have been my ideal choice of seat anyway as I find watching the chefs at work fascinating.
We opted for the "omakase"... or set menu basically which consisted of a couple of different skewers with accompanying pickles, cucumber, rice and onsen egg. I always find the set menu a lazy person's choice but perfect if you're not in the mood for making any life altering decisions. The grill can get quite busy so found ourselves waiting a bit longer than expected and built up a bit of food jealousy from diners next to us eating scallops, salmon tataki and a very enticing scotch egg. We cleverly distracted ourselves by ordering the special cocktail of the day - yuzu margheritas!
For our skewers we opted for "Tebasaki" (chicken wings with shiso and lemon), "Nasu" (aubergine with miso butter) and "Mune" (chicken breast). They were delicious but next time a must try looked to be the "Tsukune" (minced chicken with egg yolk). On price, Tebasaki were a bit steep considering its a single tiny wing per skewer.
All in all, I'd recommend Jidori. I like the way they stick to the ethos of a yakitori-ya by only serving various types of chicken along with veggie options but just maybe they could expand to some kushiyaki 😉 ... will be back here to try the things we missed out on and more amazing cocktails. Miso happy.
