OK! Miso Hungry is back a day before a new year’s resolution was due to begin! It’s been a while since posting… like 2 years but happy to say Tacqueria has inspired me not only to post a review but to resurrect my entire food blog. It’s not easy to find a good taco in London. I’d probably say there are a handful of places but after a recommendation from a friend from West Coast (they probably take it more seriously than Mexicans) I had to give this a try. I’d have love to stay longer and next time I will to sample more of […]

You’re going to think the only streetfood I eat is pizza but it’s just a coincidence the second streetfood post is another pizza van I assure you. Actually I did plan on posting about a jerk chicken thing and something else but they were so mediocre I just couldn’t be inspired to write anything. When it comes to streetfood there is going to be a slight bias towards things I recommend only here. And I can wholeheartedly recommend Wandercrust. I was lucky to chance upon the van Broadgate a couple of days ago. Very lucky as they appear to be based closer to SE10. The […]

Sud Italia

This should be the first in a series of reviews on London streetfood. Unless you’re trawling through twitter or on a dozen e-mail lists about London Pop-Ups it can be a bit hit and miss. Luckily Miso inbox sorts out the spam from the quality cuts in gmail so you don’t have to. My lunchtime snack today is pizza from Sud Italia located in Spitalfields Market. You can find them here every weekday. Their van houses a mobile wood-fired oven cooking up authentic Neapolitan style pizza at very reasonable prices. I went for the Nduja for a bit of a spicy kick at £7. Miso […]

Oils for Frying

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Research

It started with a simple question which I thought a quick google search would resolve but Miso falling down a rabbit hole here. The simple question was: “If I don’t want to use coconut oil what else is good for frying with?” Basically, I’ve been using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for frying as I’d heard vegetable oils are now considered unhealthy and olive oil is not good over certain temperatures but not really considered why. Coconut oil is great but sometimes you don’t want a coconut taste in the background. My quick google search quickly descended into an oblivion of technical terms and conflicting “expert” […]

Fabada Asturiana

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Eat In

Here’s a first of what will hopefully be a series. I like to research recipes from all over the world and replicate as best I can at home. This weekend I was inspired as we walked past a nearby Spanish Delicatessan, Spandeli in Hackney and picked up a “Fabada kit” which is hearty bean stew originating from Northern Spain. The kit consists of a piece of pancetta, morcilla and a chorizo sausage. I had some fava beans sitting in the cupboard from the last attempt (over a year ago!) and just needed to bolster the dish with some more pork (I chose pork belly on […]

Piebury Corner

It’s pies and craft beer…. winning formula! I’d like to say I was here on the way to watch a football game but the reason for being in the area was to look at vintage furniture… the pie saved my life! We went for a “Theirry Henry – Venison and red wine” and a “Charlie Nicholas – Scotch Pie”. I washed mine down with a can of Beavertown Neck Oil but I’d rather a can of vintage Tennents (pictured) if they were still in production. The pies themselves had a good pastry and rich with filling. Miso satisfied. Piebury Corner 209-211 Holloway Road Holloway London […]

Escocesa means Spanish in English. I looked it up on their site and thought it was quite clever 🙂 I lost track of the rest of the story but essentially I think we’re eating a fusion of Scottish and Spanish tapas. Or probably more accurately Scottish seafood prepared in a Spanish way so not fusion-ey as the name initially implied… but maybe that’s a good thing! We’re a group of 4 and I manage to get left in charge to order for the table… Miso favourite task! I feel particularly in the mood for oysters, pan con tomate (a new favourite), octopus, squid, prawns and […]

Curio Cabal + TA TA Eatery

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Eat Out, Recommended

I’m giving Curio Cabal quite a solid rating here which I think is highly justified by the amazing food offered by TA TA here. As I understand it started out as a sort of pop-up residency within this coffeeshop but has now gone permanent (Wednesday to Saturday evenings) for which I’m ever greatful. I believe there are also plans to serve lunch too. “Ta Ta” meaning he and she in Mandarin is run by Zijun Meng and Ana Gonçalves who both worked with Nuno Mendes at Viajante and Chiltern Firehouse. They serve up an amazing family feel fusion of Chinese and Portuguese food. Miso shall […]

UPDATE– 18th Nov 2016 It’s been about a year and a half since I was last here but the last time was brunch. This time I’m here for dinner and in a big birthday group. Hotbox very accommodating to group dining and don’t mind us being a little rowdy and getting balloons everywhere! Half of us order for themselves but ever willing to share I manage to talk a friend next to me to order together 🙂 We start with smoked bone marrow and follow it up with beef short rib. For sides we can’t resist a bit of mac ‘n’ cheese. I’m so glad […]

Chick ‘n Sours

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Eat Out

What an overrated hipster waste of space! I walk past here all the time and it’s been on my list after all the rave reviews I’ve read, major publicity and I noticed there’s now another branch open in Covent Garden. This had raised expectations a bit too far out of control it would seem. We ordered a sour each first of all and for whatever reason they arrived a good 15 mins apart. Not a major issue but all things tend to multiply when added together (that makes no sense but you kind of see what I mean!). Both my dining partner and myself are […]
